Coens soon to a theater near you

A one-sheet for the upcoming Coen Brothers film, “No Country for Old Men” has surfaced, which you can see here. The film is scheduled to be released Nov. 21. You can read what some people are already saying about it here.

The Coen brothers’ upcoming release based on Cormac McCarthy’s novel looks like it might be another winner for the fraternal filmmakers. Reviews from Cannes looked promising even if the European film fest that loves the Coens lauded no awards on them this time around. But really who knows? The Coens’ other films based on others’ original ideas (Intolerable Cruelty and The Ladykillers) fell far short of the mark. Let’s hope this one puts the brothers back on track. Looking forward to seeing if — and hoping that — No Country for Old Men re-establishes the Coens as filmmakers to keep an eye on.
I worked a few days with Ethan and Joel and found them fascinating to observe. Joel tended to remain quietly next to the monitor watching very carefully during shooting, while Ethan was more often near the camera conferring with the actors and the camera operator. I would observe Joel in conversation with the DP and then they would call Ethan over so they could make decisions together. Ethan was very relaxed and easy going, whether directing George Clooney, with whom he has a long relationship, or an actor he didn’t know such as myself. Both of them seemed to be very casual with light and easy humor even with a cast and crew of over 200 people under their supervision. Clooney ate lunch in his trailer but Joel and Ethan sat down at the same communal table with many of the actors and crew and we shared some casual talk and laughs about current events.Although they have had some near misses they haven’t really had any “disasters” and their successful pictures are some of the “quirky best” movies of the past 20 years. I am always excited to see what they will deliver next.
